I appreciate the good intention behind this small video and everything is clear. The first thing, or mistake, I think most teacher out there are doing is to talk to drummers like they are not intelligent... The main problem here for me basically is to see your need to use an electronic gadget, and not your ears, to tuned a drumhead. For me, it's a clear indication of your incapacity of hearing correctly harmonics for yourself, and an obvious lack of confidence into your capability of adjusting those sound together, setting all lugs at the same harmonic. The other obvious issue is the batter drumhead, which you didn't choke, it's going to have sound and vibration. You don't need to think about ''do I have 1 free hand or 2 free hands to tuned?''. It doesn't matter, what matter is the tuning. When I put the strainer ''OFF'', it comes down naturally with gravity. The only reason you have to think about Q-tips is because you put the snare upside down on the floor, off the stand... It's easier to put the stand very high with the snare on it, strainer off, and simply put one hand on the top head to choke it while you are tuning the resonance head with the other free hand and my head upside down, not the snare... Also, I don't use electronic device to tuned my drums. The best advice I could give you is to not play with your arms and wrist crossing 1 on top of the other, it's painful to watch honestly. At this point, you should try the Simon Philips position, open-handed, because you are clearly not comfortable with the hi-hats on your left and judging by a 9 years old video, no one seem to care enough about drumming to tell you that.
Hey sir, sorry but I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with everything you have here. I total get that others may have their own techniques and approaches, but having something that's best for you doesn't invalidate what others do. For example I had been tuning by ear for 30 years and was "proud" that I didn't need a device. Then I gave the Tune-bot a try and honestly it's a game changer. I still start by tuning by ear. But then I finish the job with the Tune-bot. I can get the same exact pitch every single time with it. When in the studio, I can re-adjust the tuning of the drums between songs and make sure everything has the same exact tuning for each session. It doesn't replace tuning by ear, it compliments it.
that all seems pretty pedantic way of doing it.. I've just been shoving a drumstick under it for like 20+ years.. works for me
I don't think a stick will fit under my strands, not loose enough.
I love my DW collectors kit. it's a bop kit that I use all the time for everything.
Cool, what finish is it?
@@drumdrumdrum It's a silver sparkle with nickel hardware. I bought it at Forks Drum Closet in Nashville.
Sweet!
What APP do u use to get correct TENSION or TONE on ur phone?
I haven't tied any phone apps. I also never liked using those "Drum Dial" devices. Instead of use the "Tune-bot Studio" as seen here: ua-cam.com/video/ZHYJ6vZPskI/v-deo.html
I usually use the Vater 7a Manhattan sticks for indoor venues and the Los Angeles sticks for outside. What a great hickory stick. These feel like the old 5b Promark sticks I used many years ago. I use grip tape and the balance is better yet. Any idea of what your Go To stick would be? I really enjoyed this review. I hope you keep reviewing new drumsticks !
Thanks! I generally prefer Oval tips, so I like the Promark 5a forward weighted ones. I also liked using the "Zildjian" branded 5a as those are also Ovals - a slightly different take of the Vic Firths.
btw this is the video I did on the Zildjian 5a: ua-cam.com/video/4MjmyfNZw-0/v-deo.html
Which one do you think would make a good top hihat for jazz? I have a k con top hat (955g) that’s too heavy for my liking, so I want to make it a bottom hat. Looking for something 650-700g and most of these fast crashes are around that weight.
Generally, some sort of K would fare better than an A for jazz. That's due to them having less overtones, so they sit in better with that type of music (they're less "forward "). Here too I'd say the K custom.

I found this clip to be extremely useful in seeing the comparison between the 2 hit hat lines; especially the format of having the different cymbal sounds cut back to back. great job on the video
Thank you!
I have been using REMO heads since 1985. In almost 40 years, I've had maybe one, two "bad" heads. I just put all Ambassador heads on a $200 SPL birch kit and it sounds excellent. I have tried Evans several times and they have consistently sounded dead or "sacky."

Amazing, please a drum cover of Too Late: Frozen

Personally Sean, I absolutely love the sound of that K Custom 14 I will really wish Zildjian actually did a 13 inch version or that would be a really great Cymbal to be somewhere between the crash and a splash
I total respect that. : ) I have 2 old 14" K Darks (not custom) that I love, but they only come out for recording sessions.

Very cool. I personally found the single-ply heads to be a little clearer overall, especially on the smaller toms. Love the A/B comparison, it really helps!

Stacks have never really been my thing. The only combo Ive ever found that really rocked me was an 11” oriental splash over a 16” special dry crash.
I hear ya. Yeah, stack sounds are definitely a very specialized thing.
@@drumdrumdrum yeah I liked that combo because it sounded more like a china.

Of course you can head a difference! I have a good amount of snare heads and have tried a lot. I have my favorites for certain drums but the Ambassador is the best all around head ever made.
Cool! I've still got a lot of experimenting to do. : )
Just check if the clutch fits your hihat stand, cause sadly not everyone fits all...
Hi there, Richard here ,maybe you can help me, i have put together a cow bell tree from a cymbal stand but i have noticed that there are rattles happening on it, can you advice me on how i may over come this, many thanks Richard.
Not sure how helpful this is, but first you need to know from where (which part of) the stand the rattling comes from. i.e. if you hold onto a certain part of the stand while playing, does the rattling stop?
hi m8, maybe you can help me ,, i have made up a cow bell tree but i have noticed that there are rattles happening, do you have any advice that will help me over come the problem ?
I really dig the custom dark crashes and to my ear they are much nicer than the standard K darks. I have the 16 and 18. The rest of the line is nice but never rocked my socks. If I’m doing all Ks, I go with the custom dark crashes, EAK ride, splash and China, and a Kerope top hat over a Custom special dry bottom hat.
Interesting hihat setup with the Kerope!
@@drumdrumdrum I like a heavy bottom hat with a light top. I like the combo. It’s smooth but not too dark. Good articulation but not shrill.
I bought a pair with the nylon tip and i think they look cool, have good balance, but theyre slippery just like the Fire grains. Im not a fan at all. My VF novas hold up better than these. Great review bro

Let's look at Pearl's recommended Hoop Protector, model HPP-2 (sometimes listed as HPP2). This is a metal protector made for wooden hoops, with an optional non-slip surface that can be applied. As a test, I've show how to apply this to my old Pearl Prestige Session Select drums. We'll show how to correctly apply this product and compare it to an alternative.
I got one of these, after having less than good results with Gibraltar's rubber hoop protector (it only protects one side of the hoop, plus the glue failed after 6 months or so, twice). I like it, but one small thing to note is that the curvature of it didn't match my drum hoop perfectly (which, to be fair, is to be expected). It was slightly less curved, which meant that the (rounded) corners of the protector actually shaved off a tiny bit of my hoop. Once I noticed what was happening, I bent the corners upward ever so slightly to prevent it from doing any more damage. I don't own one, but I suspect the Drum-n-Base bass drum hoop guard works a bit better, as it's made of rubber, but unlike Gibraltar's, it protects both sides. However, note that rubber can be detrimental to lacquer finishes - the slight amount of friction caused by the beater hitting the bass drum will eventually rub the lacquer dull (this happened to me with LP's cowbell holder).
Good tip on the Drum n Base brand!
hope u understand 2 pick and match cymbals in a set by size and most important gram weight is how u tune cymbals, my set up is i have the lightest weight in every size to separate my self from all of u that will play medium and heavy cymbals, all yours sound good there also a lot of crashes its personal still put them all on the scale
I'm not very technical and I usually tune by ear,,I wanted to try this "next best thing ", and I thought this video was extremely helpful in understanding the device..thanks 👍

I think it is because my first ride was a 20” but I’ve always preferred 20s. Right now the rides in my studio are 20” IAK heavy, 20” K con med thin low, 20” 70s A med, 20” A cust med, 21 K sweet, 20” UFIP Natural heavy.
Wow, that's a lot : )
@@drumdrumdrum that’s a collection I’ve been working on since 1995. 9 times out of 10 I’m playing the K heavy. Most other times I’m playing the K Con. The rest are sentimental or for variety.
Do you have any cymbal stands that, no matter how much you tighten it, has some spin or rotation? This may be due to a broken roll pin. I find this to happen often with Gibraltar and Sound Percussion stands. Unlike most things which can break with your stand, this is repairable at home. In fact, you can actually make it stronger than when you got it. Let's look at the steps on how to repair this at home. Note that while metric probably should be used here, you can get away with the imperial sizes.
Ok, I have the DW stock on my DW Maple and PS3s on all my other drums. Your review clearly sounds what I experienced. The DW is a bit "warmer" or "darker" sounding. The PS3 had more "cut" or punch but both are equally strong. Depends on degree of darkness. I have been wanted to get a bit more cut n punch on mine. Time for a PS3. Great review.
Thank you!

Review the EVANS PODS, They are horrible.👎
Those are the red ones correct? Now I'm curious. : )
@drumdrumdrum Yeah, the red ones I'm not putting down Evans.I use their heads, But the Eq pods I got sucked, They're in the garbage.I ripped them off last night, Moongels came in from SWEETWATER and put them on no problems, Playing drums for 40 years. Never really use any dampening except for tape, Figured I give it a shot since i'm using their heads. No good.👎
The snare drum sounds terrible so the number of wires doesn't matter.
I dig the 16. Shocking. I thought I would like the 18 better. My go to is a 17” K
One of the most classic songs from the Grunge era, "Rooster" by Alice in Chains was one of the most played (sometimes overplayed) songs from the 90s.
